REALTOR® Guide to Professionalism

This section is an informative resource regarding the proper behavior all REALTORS® should follow, both legally and ethically.  While the Minnesota Department of Commerce regulates your actions legally, by becoming an Association member, you must also adhere to the National Association of REALOTRS® Code of Ethics and Professionalism Guidelines, as well as the Association Bylaws.

Courtesy, Common Sense and Communication
The Association is receiving a high volume of calls from agents, sellers and buyers regarding the lack agent courtesy and professionalism.  While the REALTORS® Code of Ethics establishes objective, enforceable ethical standards governing the professional conduct of REALTORSÒ, it does not address issues of courtesy or etiquette. The following is a partial list of professional courtesies for use by REALTORSÒ.  Real estate is a reputation business.  What you do today may affect your reputation and your business for years to come.

  • Be on time for appointments. If you must change or cancel the appointment, notify the listing office immediately. The seller may be postponing other tasks in order to help you with the best possible showing. Leave the property as you found it. Draw any drapes you have opened. Turn off any lights you may have turned on. Lock all doors you have unlocked. Report anything suspicious in a home to the listing firm at once.  Be considerate of the seller's property. Promptly return calls from other agents. They may have an offer, or may need additional information to enable them to prepare an offer.
  • Show courtesy and respect to everyone. Promise only what you can deliver - and keep your promises.

To be successful in the business, mutual respect is essential.
